Below is a list of questions to ask yourself before purchasing a home security system.
  • What do I want from my home security system?
  • If I buy cameras, do I want a monitoring platform or a recording of events?
  • How many cameras, motion sensors, and door/window alarms do I need?
  • Do I want active monitoring or a passive safety net?
  • Am I getting my system because of a previous break-in, a deterrent for future break ins, or as a platform to monitor my kids?

Why am I getting a system?

Whether you are getting a system for security or monitoring your child while at work, home security should be a concern of every home owner. This consideration is one of the largest because it will ultimately determine what you really need. In most cases, a simple home monitoring system that will alert the home owner of opened doors or windows will be sufficient for child monitoring. If a parent is concerned due to a previous run-away, it might be advisable to add a camera system with remote viewing capabilities. These systems can be linked or separate depending on what your preferences are.

If I get cameras, do I want monitoring or recording?

This question can easily be answered with the purpose of the system. If the system is there primarily as a system to monitor and record possible break-ins, recording is a primary requirement. If the system is only used as a monitoring system for your kids while you're at work, recording my not be necessary. The reason this is important, is due to the system that is required. Wireless cameras are easy and cheap to find but a recording device or computer with sufficient storage and the correct program. Whether you get wireless cameras or wired cameras, most services don't offer free lifetime monitoring. Remote monitoring is possible for free but isn't something most users know how to set-up on their own.

Is a paid monitoring service better?

This depends on your preferences. Many times a monitoring company will offer services that you can not get on your own such as remote smoke detection, carbon monoxide detection, and motion detection alerts. But these conveniences require a monthly fee. Remote video storage is also a service that may be offered from a monitoring company. This may be ideal for some people while others could hide their storage device or

Does video quality matter?

Yes! Many cheaper cameras offer low definition of 480x640. For child monitoring, this is perfect. There's no reason to pay for high end cameras if you want to make sure your kids are at home working on homework rather than watching TV. If you are concerned about night time viewing or outdoor viewing we recommend high definition (1080p) cameras with IR lights. The reason behind this is that if there ever was a break-in, having blurry footage is least helpful thing in catching the perpetrator.

If you are considering home security monitoring or recording, call Poorman Investigations for a personal consultant in your purchase.

<![CDATA[What is GPS tracking and how can it be used for you?]]>Fri, 26 Jun 2015 03:12:01 GMThttp://investigatorindianapolis.com/blog/what-is-gps-tracking-and-how-can-it-be-used-for-youWhat is GPS?
GPS tracking is a technology also called Global Positioning Systems that allows users to view the location of the GPS device. While GPS may not seem like a new technology, there are many uses for it that most people never consider. By today's standards GPS units can be found everywhere from your cell phone to your vehicle. Even mobile apps that track a lost or stolen phone utilize GPS tracking technology to assist the user in finding their device.

What are the common uses for GPS?

As mentioned, GPS can be used in many places. Cell phones utilize GPS for times the device is stolen so that the owner can view the current location but GPS is also used for navigation. From mobile apps to dedicated or built-in GPS devices, users can view where their vehicle is located and set a destination. The device will then give turn-by-turn directions and keep track of the vehicle by utilizing GPS.

Why would a Private Investigator use GPS?

Two examples of how GPS tracking are utilized for Private Investigators are infidelity cases as well as teen safety. In both cases the owner of the vehicle is required to provide the P.I. with permission to track the vehicle through a GPS device. This technology is beneficial because it is a reliable way that a Private Investigator can track an individual he was hired to follow.

<![CDATA[Internet Safety Concerns and How to Face Them]]>Thu, 18 Jun 2015 15:53:59 GMThttp://investigatorindianapolis.com/blog/internet-safety-concerns-and-how-to-face-them
  • 95% of teens (ages 12-17) are online. (Lenhart A, et al. Teens, kindness and cruelty on social network sites. Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2010.)
  • Children are naturally curious about sex. By acting as guides, predators can exploit this curiosity and gradually lure children into sexual activity. Adolescents questioning their sexuality are even more at risk, as they may go online with the intent of finding support and companionship. (http://www.netsmartz.org/)

For parents of young adults, teens, pre-teens, and tweens the idea of their kids being online can be a little scary. This fear is not without reason because in today's massive online netscape it is becoming increasingly easy for predators to find kids. With so many avenues for people to stay in touch, the internet has become a literal playground for online predators.

While these fears have purpose, the internet is not to blame. For many services such as Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, and Kik, users have the opportunity to limit who is capable of contacting them. In a grander scheme, parents have the ability to disable downloads on mobile devices that they would not otherwise approve.

Education is key for internet safety. Education for kids to know who they can and can not talk to online as well as education for adults to know what their kids are doing, who they are talking to, and what apps they are using. There are apps available for parents to monitor their kids activities without even needing to look at the child's phone or tablet. Everything from what apps your child is using to where they are currently located and what speed they are driving is capable with today's advanced technology.

If you are concerned about your child's activities online and would like to have a Private Investigator review his or her online doings, please contact Poorman Investigations for more information. Poorman Investigations can assist you in monitoring your child's actions by utilizing monitoring software or even scanning a laptop or desktop for deleted files that the child may be trying to hide.

<![CDATA[Everything you always wanted to know about infidelity, but were afraid to ask]]>Fri, 05 Jun 2015 22:39:48 GMThttp://investigatorindianapolis.com/blog/everything-you-always-wanted-to-know-about-infidelity-but-were-afraid-to-askInfidelity Facts from Susan Walsh July 24th, 2013
  • 11% of adults who have been married or cohabited have been unfaithful to their partner (Treas & Giesen, 2000).
  • Infidelity is influenced by many social and demographic factors. All of the following were associated with an increased risk of infidelity:
               1. Having been part of a couple for a long time
               2. Having had a high number of prior sex partners
               3. Being male or African American
               4. Living in a central city
               5. Thinking about sex several times a day
  • Respondents who reported that their relationships were “pretty happy” and “not too happy” were two and four times more likely, respectively, to have reported extramarital sex than respondents who reported that they were “very happy” with their relationships (Atkins et al., 2001).
  • 94% of married men and women had only one sex partner (their spouse) in the past 12 months, 4% had 2-4 partners, and 1% had over 5 partners (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels, 1994).

While many factors contribute to an unfaithful spouse, the data above shows that a large majority of couples remain faithful. If you are concerned about your spouse or significant other here are 5 questions you should consider before letting your fears get the best of you.

               1. Has your spouse been working late more than normal?
               2. Has your spouse been more distant when you are together?
               3. Does your spouse become upset or deflect your questions when you ask where he/she has been?
               4. Have you found clothing in the house or his/her vehicle that does not belong to you?
               5. Has he/she received phone calls or texts outside what would be normal that he/she seems secretive about?

If you answered yes to more than 1 of these questions, it may be advisable to seek a professional opinion. Here are some things you can do that will help a private detective determine if your spouse has been cheating. What is their usual schedule like? What differences have you noticed about them? What were your answers to the above questions?

Sometimes the fear of an unfaithful spouse can be our own imaginations creating a fear that is unlikely to occur in 94% of marriages. If this fear is one that is a true concern, we recommend giving Poorman Investigations a call for a free consultation. In all relationships communication is the key to success. Whether your spouse was unfaithful previously, is currently unfaithful, or would never look at someone the way he/she looks at you; remember that an open line of communication can make the relationship work.
